    Cutcliffe Big Man On Campus

    * David Cutcliffe is now the Big Man On Campus at Duke. At least in football that is. The former 53-year-old Tennessee offensive coordinator and former head coach at Ole Miss was introduced Saturday as the new head coach at Duke. Cutcliffe wouldn't entertain the possibility that Duke couldn't win immediately. "I can't look at it any other way than it has to be a fast-track," he said. "We have to win this coming year."

    * Like father like son. Seems Tommy Bowden is of the let them run stadium steps school of punishment philosophy. He had initially said that Clemson middle linebacker Cortney Vincent would play in the Dec. 31 Chick-fil-A Bowl against No. 22 Auburn. Vincent, the Tigers’ starting middle linebacker, was arrested and charged last Sunday morning with DUI. Now he is saying that he may be suspended for the game.

    * You have to admire Steve "The Weasel" Spurrier for his audacity. He offered Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster the chance to lead the Gamecocks' defense. Foster politely declined and will remain as the Hokies' coordinator.

"I'm staying here," Foster said after Saturday's practice in preparation for Tech's Jan. 3 meeting with Kansas in the Orange Bowl. "It's flattering ... but I've got a great job here and I work for the best head coach in the country. I'm proud of what we've accomplished here. But as good as it's been, I think we can continue to get better." Why would Foster leave Virginia Tech to go to work for Spurrier and coach at a lesser level school? Makes no sense.
